A New Muppet Movie: Kermit and Miss Piggy Turn Out

The Muppets have released their rendition of the Wizard of Oz. I haven’t seen it, but I’m sure it’s fun. Who out there can’t recall the words to “Rainbow Connection” which opened the first Muppet movie? I’ve got to see if they have that on iTunes.

The fellows who operate the muppets seem to pretty happy about their jobs. In particular, the Kermit operator Steve Whitmire struck me as the happiest guy on the planet. In an enviable way, not a silly way.

Here’s a shot from a different appearance from a few years ago. That grin pretty much tells the story of his job.

Thora Birch is now blond and very skinny. Who wouldn’t be if they had a chance? Her latest film is “Slingshot” with David Arquette, Julianna Margulies, Balthazar Getty and Katie Chonacas aka Miss Michigan Teen Motor City. The movie premiered as part of the Tribeca Film Festival.

Jeff Goldblum Shows Up in Leather

Jeff Goldblum appeared for the premiere of “Special Thanks To Roy London.” He’s a completely genial fellow, almost eerily relaxed on the carpet. I told him he had a great “evil genius”-looking leather jacket on. I thought with his numerous “genius” roles (The Fly, Independence Day, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, etc.) he would appreciate it, but it just made him a little bashful. He said it was the only coat he had that would fit over his suit.

He’s also about seven feet tall in person. A full length photo of him is tough to get sometimes.

Felicity Huffman Wears What Her Husband Picked Out

Felicity Huffman of “Desperate Housewives” stars in “Transamerica,” a story of transexual who long ago fathered a now wayward son. A good popcorn movie, it appears.

She said her husband, William H. Macy, picked out her outfit.

Stephen Colbert at the Tribeca Film Festival

Hey, who knew. Stephen Colbert from Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” has branched out into film. The premiere of Great New Wonderful took place at the festival tonight in which he appears with Maggie Gyllenhaal. His next film is “Bewitched” in which Nicole Kidman stars.

The Interpreter Premiere

The big event tonight was the premiere of the “Interpreter” starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. It was the opening feature of the Tribeca Film Festival, an institution founded by Robert Deniro in the wake of 9/11. From an entertainment reporter’s perspective, it was a “perfect storm” of people who don’t like getting their picture taken. Nicole Kidman, Robert Deniro, and Sean Penn all appeared on the carpet. However, they shot down the carpet with such speed that one photographer likened them to jets taking off from an aircraft carrier.

And at least Robin Wright Penn turned to look as Sean Penn barrelled past.

Robert moved a little more slowly than usual. It is however the first night of the festival. In a couple of days, he’ll be breaking land speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Fans of these actors might be willing to cut them some slack. In truth though, these actors are wasting the time of close to 100 working people who have to cover the event. For still photographers, this requires arriving up to 10 hours before the premiere to hold a spot. We don’t look forward to this kind of thing.

To be the contrarian though, Sheryl Crow worked the carpet very nicely. She NEVER does this and avoids most news coverage of her events. I have no idea why she chose differently tonight, but it was a refreshing change. Also, mad props out to Naomi Watts, Mariah Carey, Ted Turner, Kyle MacLachlan, and Elle MacPherson for allowing good pictures to be made tonight.

A few blocks away, Time held a party at its gleaming Time Warner Center for its 100 Most Influential People issue. Jon Stewart performed and worked the arrivals line properly. He’s as cool in person as he is on TV.
