Elizabeth Hurley Launches “Beach” – Her Swimsuit Line

Thursday, April 21st, 2005

If you read the New York Times regularly, you’ll have noticed that they indulge in celebrity worship quite a bit. Recently, they described how Elizabeth Hurley is managing to transition out of the model phase of her life and become a designer. The Times was very impressed by this endeavor.

To me though, it seems like a move that anyone in a similar position might attempt. Hurley is quite a sharp and elegant woman, so I expect that she will go as far as she wants with it.

As part of this transformation, she appeared at Saks today with models in tow to launch “beach,” her new line of swimwear. To me, the name “beach” sounds like that episode of Seinfeld when Kramer launches his cologne of the same name. Life imitating art.

Leonard Lauder, the elderly billionaire CEO of Estee Lauder, hovered off stage out of sight, so it appears she’s got the financial backing she needs to succeed. The suits look great, especially if you already look like Elizabeth Hurley.

Vanity Fair Party Celebrating the Tribeca Film Festival

Wednesday, April 20th, 2005

Vanity Fair has been able to position itself as the classiest of American celeb oriented magazines. Their cover is reserved for only the most bankable movie stars in the world, so it is a coveted opportunity. Consquently, if a star gets invited to one of their parties, the star tends to go. The Vanity Fair party after the Oscars is the premier Oscar afterparty, and this event sets the tone for every other event the magazine holds for the rest of the year.

It’s a sign of Robert Deniro’s clout that Vanity Fair throws an annual party every year to help open the Tribeca Film Festival. Although the guest list is a mere shadow of their Oscar party, it’s still a very useful event to cover. It’s even more interesting that Vanity Fair and the festival are able to have their party in the New York State Supreme Court building. The court is located downtown and is best known as the venue where Martha Stewart strolled in and out carrying various expensive handbags during her trial.

Who do you call to rent a courthouse for a party? It’s hard to imagine the red tape involved. Nonetheless Vanity Fair was allowed to turn the place into a glamorous night club for the evening.

The Interpreter Premiere

Tuesday, April 19th, 2005

The big event tonight was the premiere of the “Interpreter” starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. It was the opening feature of the Tribeca Film Festival, an institution founded by Robert Deniro in the wake of 9/11. From an entertainment reporter’s perspective, it was a “perfect storm” of people who don’t like getting their picture taken. Nicole Kidman, Robert Deniro, and Sean Penn all appeared on the carpet. However, they shot down the carpet with such speed that one photographer likened them to jets taking off from an aircraft carrier.

Here’s Nicole running by.

Demi Shows Up for Ashton Kutcher’s “A Lot Like Love” Premiere

Monday, April 18th, 2005

Ever the devoted couple, Ashton and Demi show up hand in hand to promote his latest romantic comedy, “A Lot Like Love.” They moved slower than usual on the carpet, despite seeming to be uncomfortable with all the attention. Ashton in particular appeared to be low-key to the point of almost bashful. They both watched the entire movie. Many times stars will skip out on sitting through a premiere, but these two did the work.

Mariah Carey is releasing a new CD on April 21, 2005, “The Emancipation of Mimi”. She’s been hitting New York hard this week making at least a half dozen appearances. She popped out of David Letterman today to greet the press. She didn’t say anything though; she doesn’t use her voice at all for 48 hours before a concert.

Courtney Cox Shows Up at Sephora

Wednesday, April 13th, 2005

Suprise of surprises, Courtney Cox made a corporate promotional appearance at Sephora today. She hasn’t been seen here in several years, so it caught us off guard to hear that she would break her low profile with a simple corporate endorsement. There were some restrictions; no one was allowed to shoot her in the store, so we were all outside. That worried us at the outset, but she got out of her SUV and played nice. Very calm, methodical, and stable. Not a bad performance on her part. Thanks tons CC.
